[SELECTED TRANSCRIPT OF PARTICIPANTS WHO AGREED TO PUBLICIZE INTERVIEW DATA] SUBJECT A [Twitter] P: My Twitter accound got hacked. What should I do? Do you have any clue how to prevent it? I: Well... There's no easy answer, but you probably need to change your password now. [Craigslist; looking for housing rental] P: I know where should I go. (She went to 'housing'>'rental' directory, and typed 'Roselyn Studio') I am looking for a studio, but they do not have many available. I look through the list. This seems fine. (She clicks the first link, checks the detail, and get back to the list page.) I: Do you have any difficulty while doing it? P: Even though I searched with 'roselyn studio', some results are actually in a different apartment. So I usually search twice with additional keyword 'riverplace', which gives more accurate but less results. This is pretty annoying. There might be even more keywords, but I would not bother. I: What do you check for each housing? P: The studio size is pretty important to me. However, only one out of ten postings have square-feet information. Sometimes they miss move-in date, which is also very important. So I should email the person for more information. P: Sometimes people upload irrelevant photos such as lobby image from the web site. I would interpret it as lack of confidence for the rooms. P: Can I send an email to this person? (She opened her Gmail account, and copy-paste the posting information.) I: Do you always compose emails manually? What if that can be improved? P: It takes a lot of time to write emails, because it's not simple copy and paste. Sometimes I need to introduce myself or schedule time for visiting. If Craigslist provides email templates or other communication system that I can simply check what information to request, I would definitely use it. I think it would be very useful for non-native speakers such as international students. P: I want a place larger than my current room, which is 385 square feet. That means, at least 450 ft2. I: Why don't you use the custom filter? P: Well, Amazon.com has that kind of detailed filters. However, I think the best part of Craigslist is simplicity. I might have seen the filters, but did not bother setting them every time I visit this site. I: Will you use a third-party app if it can remember your preferences and automatically filter postings? P: Is the app free of charge? I: No it's free. P: How does it work? Does it ask "did you want ..." on top of the browser? I don't want that. I'd prefer email digest that sends me daily summary of new postings that fit with my preferences. For example, let me show you this site. (She opened 'idealist', a job searching site.) I can search jobs with any keyword, and set it to regularly send me emails containing upcoming jobs. Isn't it amazing? I wish Craigslist also had this feature. [Indeed and Idealist; job searching] P: These are two services that I frequently visit for job searching these days. They show pretty different search result for the same keyword. For example, when I search for 'korean', idealist gives much relevant jobs while Indeed does not. I: Is there an option for advanced search? P: Maybe, but I don't think I will use those options. I: Okay. Do you want any additional functionality related with job searching? P: I really need something like Excel spreadsheet for managing jobs that I applied. If I press 'save the job' button on any job forum, the job is added to the spreadsheet. After applying a job, the spreadsheet is used for tracking progress. SUBJECT B [University library] P: For literature review I mostly start from Google Scholar site. I search a keyword of interest such as "political ecology", and look for journals not books. I click 'Find @ ___' if available, but it works only occasionally (the linked page in XXX library was broken). In that case I drag this (title link) to copy, and paste it in the library web site. (She searched the journal name in XXX library search, and landed on article search result page) Huh? Why am I here? There must be an option here to search journals only, but it always takes so much time to find it. (She explored tab UIs looking for the menu) The library recently changed its design, making it much harder to find the menu. (She finally found the "classical version" for previous design) Here it is! I: Do you want any new feature or improvement of the library site? P: It would be great if it had some visualization that shows the overview and boundary of my interest. For example, if I am interested in 'politics', 'ecology', and 'environment', then it would show relevant journals and articles. That would be very helpful for both literature study and finding a venue to publish interdisciplinary work. P: If the site allows me to create my own shortcuts of specific pages, I would like to use it very well. [Zotero] P: When writing papers I often need to cite web pages and videos. The Chrome extension of Zotero is very helpful because I can simply click the button to add to my library. As I like to organize stuff that I collect, I categorize them with star ratings and numbers. For example, I use 'school' category that has 'dissertation research'. However I usually do not take note for each item, because I would somehow re-visit the sites when I need them. [AdBlock] P: I love it! SUBJECT C [Tourism sites] P: Before visiting Bahama, I collected information from official tourism sites, forums such as Trip advisor, or blog postins. When I found an interesting page, I scrap them by bookmarking to smartphone app (e.g. Yelp), email to myself, or pressing FaceBook 'Like' buttons - which is also useful for sharing with my friends later. I wish I could easily share any information in smartphones with friends. It would be also good if I can send links from my PC to smartphones. P: After collecting information, I make a schedule using Excel spreadsheet. [Amazon] P: Showing available colors of every product in the listing page would not be that useful. I usually need overall information (instead of colors) of some products (not every product). But if I am looking for products with a specific color, it would be much faster than by clicking one by one. I: What about Trip Advisor site? Do you feel the same needs for places without images? P: I would expect that sites without images would not contain valuable information. If I am really interested in, I would search Google for images. [AdBlock extension] P: There are popup ads that cover the content and follow scrolling. Although they usually have very small 'X' or 'Close' buttons, I often miss-click the popup to open the web page. That's pretty annoying. I: Have you used AdBlock? P: I have, but am not using now. Those apps have viruses, don't they? I also don't use any extension. They would be very useful in the beginning, however they also restrict in many ways. For example, Popup Blocker extension sometimes automatically block crucial popup windows. So I ended up manually pressing 'X' buttons. SUBJECT D [TV Streaming site] P: I had been using XXXX for watching TV shows, but a friend of mine told me that her computer got viruses from there. Since then I am trying not to go there. Instead I visit AAAA (forum for Korean-speaking married women). P: This site (AAAA) requires ID, while XXXX does not. In that sense, I guess AAAA would be safer. I: Could you show what you regularly do here? P: I usually go to Buy&Sell for kid's stuff. I choose DC/MD/VA as current location, and look through the list. Here is the 'write' button. I can upload photos of toys to sell. I: Do you use emails to communicate with buyers? P: There's a messaging system of AAAA. I mostly use it. I: Do you have any difficulty while using Buy&Sell? P: When I upload photos, they should be resized to be smaller than a certain size. As I am not professional at those things and my camera takes very large pictures, I should use another photo editing tool and do more and more. That's bothersome. Except that... I don't have a big problem. ... P: To watch videos, I go here (Movie and Video board) and choose one. There are many links, all free, so they may include advertisements. Some links would not work properly or have very long buffering time. Some have 'no buffering' keyword, but they might include many advertisements like every 5 minutes. I would not watch them. I: Do you want to check their qualities in advance? P: That would be useful, but video quality is just one of many aspects. Some are high quality videos but require paid subscription. [Facebook] P: I really don't like Facebook. FB seems like always looking for a chance to get my personal interest and private information. Also, one day FB suddenly has changed the timeline to show double column view. That was very annoying. I: What do you think about "Complete your previous work?" question here? P: Why do they ask me the question? I don't like it. I don't understand why people use FB. I joined FB because my students wanted to communicate with me with it. Otherwise I would not. P: FB is very complex. One day I tried to create a new album and to upload photos. (I don't clearly remember) But I could not create and upload at the same time. That was very annoying experience. P: Also a friend of mine told me that if I 'like' her photos or put comment on them, others will be able to see it even if the photos are private. […] Here's another example that I don't like about [the SNS]. One day I uploaded a family photo, and my family-in-law shared those photos. That's totally fine. However, the problem began when friends of my family-in-law started liking and commenting on my family photos. I received a lot of notifications of those activities by people I do not know at all. I felt a little scared. P: Chrome browser is also scary. It remembers which web sites I visited. Even in Korean web sites, there are ad banners of sites in English that I visited. I wonder how those ad companies know it. I don't think I am very sensitive about privacy, but all these things make me nervous. SUBJECT E [Online shopping] P: The design of XMARKET is very distracting in comparison with Amazon.com, which has much simpler design. The entire process of shopping including finding, putting items in cart, and paying is very complex. I: Which item in the XMARKET page do you think unnecessary or annoying? P: These advertisements on the side bar are clearly unnecessary, however, I guess they show them for some reasons (the company needs to show them). I: Let's assume you have right to do any modification. P: Then I would remove those sidebar ads on both sides. However, if these promotions are relevant to my current interest, like what Amazon does, I would keep them. P: (Pointing ads with coupon deals) Coupon deals are not very interesting to me. They probably would require signing up and my personal information. I would not bother that hassle for small discount. I: What do you think about shopping cart and personal coupon box? P: They are useful occassionally. I: How about the middle column? (The middle area contains the most information about the currently-selected product) P: Shipping information is always useful, but I don't need extra inforamtion about secured payment, getting product at the shop, or printing recepts. P: (Scrolling through a long page showing over 20 clothes) I cannot select a cloth to buy here. Instead I must remember the name of each cloth that I want to buy. I usually write names on scratch paper, and select them in the menu on top of the page. This is quite annoying. I: Do you want to keep the page like this, but having extra selection tool? Or do you want to see each of them separately as different products like Amazon.com? P: I definitely want to keep the current page layout. I like the brand of this page, and prefer to select some of their products in one page. Only the selection process is inconvenient. I: What do you think about customer review in XMARKET? P: Ratings are somewhat helpful. However, unlike Amazon.com, I cannot fully trust them especially when they got all 5 star ratings - they might have asked their friends and families to get high ratings.
